Cape Town Sports Events This Winter

Cape Town doesn’t slow down when temperatures drop. Our winter months may bring high rainfall, but they also offer plenty of crisp, clear days and an active sporting calendar. From coastal road races and mountain trail runs to packed rugby stadiums, Cape Town sports events in winter draw dedicated locals and visitors keen to get in on the action.

Winter is a great time to plan a trip for travellers planning to participate in or enjoy the energy of live sport. And if you’re looking for a well-located base close to the action, Sea Point offers easy access to running routes, the stadium, and some of the best views in town.

Here’s a look at what’s on, how to plan, and where to base yourself.

Rugby at the DHL Stadium

DHL Stadium has become the home of rugby in Cape Town — and for good reason. It’s centrally located in Green Point, close to Sea Point, the V&A Waterfront, and the Atlantic Seaboard, making it easy to get to and even easier to build a weekend around. The stadium is clean, modern, and designed for proper sightlines, so you’re not stuck squinting at the action no matter where you sit.

Cape Town crowds are engaged but laid-back, and there’s a strong social aspect to game day. You’ll see plenty of locals arriving early to grab food nearby or walking in from Sea Point. For visitors, attending Cape Town sports events like this is a simple way to experience the city’s sporting spirit.

Why it’s worth it: Minimal planning, maximum atmosphere. You’re in a rugby city, in a good seat, with plenty to do before and after the game.

Tip: Match-day tickets sell fast, so book early. And if you’re not going, you can still watch from one of Sea Point’s bars or restaurants, many of which screen games live.

This winter, the stadium hosts two major fixtures:

Springboks vs Barbarians

This international fixture is a standout: the Barbarians are known for flair and unpredictability, and the Springboks face them for the first time on home soil. The match will take place at the DHL Stadium, just a short drive or a 30-minute walk from Sea Point. Book your tickets online through webtickets.

Springboks vs Australia

Part of the Castle Lager Rugby Series, this match brings Australia back to Cape Town in what’s always a fiery contest. The stadium will be packed, the vibe electric, and the taxis busy—another good reason to stay nearby and skip the post-game traffic.

Both are solid reasons to plan a weekend around Cape Town sports events. Hotels in Sea Point offer easy access on foot or by rideshare, and you’re still close to Cape Town’s main winter attractions — from restaurants and galleries to coastal walks.

Running Events to Know About

Cape Town has no shortage of race days, especially in winter. Here are a few worth timing your trip around:

Table Mountain 16

The Table Mountain 16 is one of those races that feels like a true Cape Town experience. With a route that takes runners from Constantia Nek up to the Woodhead Dam on Table Mountain, this is a full-body reminder of why trail runners love the city.

At 16km, the distance may sound manageable, but the steady climb and cool winter conditions add a layer of challenge. The route is almost entirely on gravel and cement jeep track, with just 200m of single-track. Once you reach the top, you loop around the dam before making your way back down the mountain.

Entry includes a SANParks conservation fee and a compulsory shuttle from registration to the start. There’s secure parking at the Constantia Sports Complex, and runners are encouraged to arrive early to collect race numbers and enjoy a complimentary coffee at La Parada, which also serves as the start and finish point.

Be prepared for changing conditions: it’s mid-winter and the mountain weather is unpredictable. A windproof jacket is strongly recommended, and hydration gear is essential. There’s one refill station near the dam, but no cups or sachets will be handed out.

Quick Details:

  • Date: Sunday, 22 June 2025
  • Start Time: 08:00
  • Venue: La Parada Restaurant, Constantia Nek
  • Entry Fee: R470 (SANParks fee, shuttle service, coffee)

Why it’s worth it: The views, the climb, the stillness at the top—it’s one of the city’s best winter trail runs, combining accessibility with just the right amount of burn.

Cape Town Festival of Running

The Cape Town Festival of Running brings a full weekend of road races to the Sea Point Promenade, with a 50km ultra, a 21km half marathon, and a fun 5 x 5km team relay. It’s one of the city’s best winter running events — varied enough to appeal to seasoned distance athletes and first-timers.

The 50km ultra, made up of ten 5km loops, is flat, fast, and ideal for runners chasing PBs. The course is well-lit and clearly marked, with water and Coke stations throughout. Runners are encouraged to carry their own hydration to help reduce single-use plastic.

The relay, starting at midday, is all about shared effort. Teams of five take turns running 5km each, with corporate groups, schools, and families making up much of the field. It’s a good-natured race and a great way to participate in the festival without taking on a long-distance event.

The 21km half marathon sets off on Sunday and follows a striking coastal route. Starting opposite the SABC building, it winds through Sea Point, Camps Bay, and along Victoria Road toward Hout Bay before turning back. The climbs are steady but manageable, and the views, even in winter, are worth the effort.

Why it’s worth it: You can go big with the ultra, test yourself on a coastal half marathon, or join a team for a social run on the promenade — all in one of Cape Town’s most walkable neighbourhoods. Plus, if you’re staying in Sea Point, you’re already at the start line.

Quick Details:

  • Date: 12 & 13 July 2025
  • Start Time: 07:00- 12:00 depending on event
  • Venue: Sea Point Promenade
  • Entry Fee: R190 – R350

Totalsports Women’s Race

The Totalsports Women’s Race is held annually on National Women’s Day to celebrate women. Close to 20,000 runners and walkers wear matching race shirts and take over the streets of Cape Town, turning the city into a moving ribbon of colour (mostly pink) in support of women across South Africa.

Participants can choose between a 10km or a 5km route, starting from Darling Street in District Six. The course winds through the city centre with plenty of energy from supporters, music stations, and fellow runners. The atmosphere is inclusive, high-spirited, and suits first-time participants and experienced athletes.

Founded in 2001, this is now South Africa’s largest Women’s Day sports event, with simultaneous races in Johannesburg and Durban. In Cape Town, the post-race vibe continues with live performances, giveaways, and a strong sense of community.

Runners who aren’t affiliated with a club will need a temporary license to participate in the 10km. Registration is essential, and the event sells out quickly.

Quick Details:

  • Date: Saturday, 9 August 2025
  • Start Time: 8:00 (10km) | 8:10 (5km)
  • Venue: Darling Street, District Six
  • Entry Fee: R150 (10km) | R115 (5km) | R210 (unlicensed 10km entry)

Why it’s worth it: You’ll be running for a cause, surrounded by good energy, and taking part in one of Cape Town’s most iconic annual races.

Blisters for Bread Walk

Blisters for Bread brings together thousands of participants of all ages. The start line is at Stephan Way, Green Point, and both the 5km and 10km routes follow the scenic Sea Point Promenade, offering fresh sea air, open views, and a flat, family-friendly course.

You don’t have to be a seasoned athlete to take part. This is a come-as-you-are event, ideal for families, school groups, work teams, or solo walkers looking to support a good cause. Every step contributes directly to feeding children in need, with the R130 entry fee helping to fund two meals for 20 learners.

At the finish line on the Green Point Common Sports Ground, the community vibe continues with live music, food stalls, and kids’ entertainment. All participants receive a commemorative medal, and complimentary refreshments will be available thanks to Coca-Cola Peninsula Beverages.

A Quick Look Ahead

While technically a spring event, the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon is worth mentioning.

Taking place on the 18–19 October this year it is Africa’s strongest contender for Abbott World Marathon Major status. That means world-class organisation, a fast and scenic route, and a powerful sense of purpose behind every kilometre.

More than 18,000 runners hit the streets over race weekend, making it a headline Cape Town sports event, with options from 5km to the full 42.2km. The flat, city-based route is ideal for personal bests. But what sets this race apart is its atmosphere: thousands of supporters lining the streets, water tables run by community crews, and volunteer effort that turns a race into a movement.

It’s a marathon built not just for elites, but for everyday runners chasing something bigger — whether that’s a qualifying time, a first finish, or just being part of the race that could change the future of African road running.

Cape Town is aiming for Major status. The way things are going, it’s only a matter of time.
