Beaches and Rivers
Several of Kenton’s beaches are just a short walk from the village, each offering something different. Families often head to the calm lagoons for safe swimming, while others explore rock pools, cast a line from the shore, or set out on long walks along open sand. With both the ocean and two tidal rivers on your doorstep, you can spend each day in a new spot without leaving town.
Kariega River
The Kariega River runs for 138 km, with 16 km navigable from Kenton. Access is easy from the slipway in town. Part of the river winds through Sibuya Game Reserve, so it’s not unusual to spot giraffe, antelope, or even elephant along the banks. The calm water is good for swimming and also popular for kayaking, paddleboarding, waterskiing, fishing, and leisurely boat trips.
Sibuya Game Reserve
A visit to Sibuya begins in Kenton with a boat cruise up the Kariega River. Along the way you might spot antelope on the hillsides, giraffe near the banks, or hear the call of fish eagles overhead. Once inside the reserve, guided drives explore forests, grasslands, and open plains where the Big Five and many other species live. Most day trips include lunch on the riverbank before the return cruise to town, often timed with sunset.
Shelley Bay
Shelley Bay is one of Kenton’s hidden gems, reached at low tide through a natural rock tunnel or by a 20-minute walk over the dunes. The small cove is enclosed by high cliffs, making it sheltered from most winds and giving the water a calm, clear quality. Its seclusion and clam rock pool makes it a favourite for picnics, swimming, and snorkelling. Check the tides before you go.
Bushman’s River Mouth
The Bushman’s River, also known as the Boesmans, is South Africa’s second-longest navigable river at 32 km. It meets the ocean between Kenton and Boesmansriviermond, with slipways on both banks for easy boat access. Upstream, the river winds past farmland and into Kariega Game Reserve, making it a peaceful route for cruises, birdwatching, and spotting wildlife along the banks. Families often use the river mouth beaches for swimming and long walks, and the three-hour trail from Boesmans to Diaz Cross is a popular outing.
Camp Figtree
When you’ve had your fill of oceanside bliss, road trip further up north to Addo to get your dose of elephant safari delight! Transition yourself from beach to bush, and spend the day in the most enchanting place in the land at the top of the Zuurberg Mountain Pass. Start your journey with an early morning departure from Kenton and arrive just in time for a delicious lunch at Camp Figtree before an afternoon game drive in Addo Elephant National Park at 2pm. Booking is essential.
Middle Beach
Middle Beach lies between the two river mouths and is easy to reach on foot from town. It’s Blue Flag accredited and a local favourite for its soft sand and gentle surf. At low tide, the rock pools are a highlight, especially the well-loved Blue Pool for safe swimming and snorkelling. Mermaid’s Pool, close by, offers a deeper, sheltered dip, while Carriage Rock is only a short walk away. With nearby parking, restrooms, and Dilly Deli just up the path for coffee, it’s a simple beach to spend the day at.
Beachcomber Horse Trails
Beachcomber Horse Trails offers guided rides along the Sunshine Coast, through coves, dune fields, and rivers. Wildlife is often seen from the saddle, and beach rides are available for all levels of experience. River trails near Kenton follow the Kariega through wetlands and quiet scenery, with chances to spot birdlife along the way.
Port Alfred Golf Club
Enjoy a game of golf at the Royal Port Alfred Golf Club, This 18-hole, par-72 course, designed by Gary Player, is about 25 minutes from Kenton. The layout moves through coastal forest, across rolling dune ridges, and along stretches with wide ocean views. Golfers can expect a mix of open fairways, tighter parkland holes, and shifting coastal winds that keep the round interesting.
