Plan an Unforgettable Two Oceans Marathon Cape Town Escape
Few races in the world match the scale, scenery, and spirit of the Two Oceans Marathon Cape Town.
Every year, thousands of runners from across the globe take on this iconic route, which winds along two coastlines, through mountain passes, and past some of Cape Town’s most scenic parts. It’s an unforgettable experience that connects people, celebrates the city, and leaves you with stories worth sharing.
With a choice of a 56km Ultra Marathon, 21.1km Half Marathon, and various fun runs and trail events, the Two Oceans Marathon Cape Town offers something for every level of runner.
And while today it’s a major event on the global running calendar, the origins of this iconic race are wonderfully humble.
Moments to Remember
The first Two Oceans Marathon took place in 1970, with just 26 runners setting off on what was originally meant to be a training run ahead of the Comrades Marathon. The entry fee? A mere 50 cents — and only 15 runners crossed the finish line. The winner, Dirkie Steyn, even ran the race barefoot!
The race made history again in 1974 when Theresa Stadler became the first female entrant at the age of 40 — completing the event in 7 hours and 33 minutes. Though it was beyond the official cut-off time, her pioneering spirit paved the way for countless women to follow.
Over the years, the Two Oceans Marathon has seen record-breaking moments, like Thompson Magawana’s legendary 1988 run, where he set a course record of 3:03:44 — a record that still stands today. Not to mention Frith van der Merwe’s phenomenal performance in 1989, smashing the women’s course record and finishing 22nd overall.
Once synonymous with the Easter weekend, the event has now found a new rhythm. In 2025, the Two Oceans Marathon Cape Town takes place over the weekend of 5 April.
Today, The Two Oceans Marathon Cape Town is an economic powerhouse, contributing up to R672 million to the local GDP annually, making it the biggest running event on the African continent by this measure.
Two Oceans Marathon Cape Town Route and Scenery
There’s a reason the Two Oceans Marathon Cape Town is dubbed “The World’s Most Beautiful Marathon.” The route takes runners through some of the most scenic parts of The Mother City, combining ocean views, mountain backdrops, and lively local neighbourhoods into one unforgettable experience.
The marathon starts in Newlands, just as the first light breaks. The buzz is electric — runners stretching, chatting, pacing. Spectators line the streets, coffee in hand, cheering as wave after wave of runners heads off down the road.
From there, it’s a steady cruise along Main Road to Fish Hoek. This section is mostly flat, allowing runners to settle into their rhythm. Spectators love this stretch — it’s easy to access and packed with cafés and coffee spots for a relaxed morning of race-watching.
Next comes the stretch between Muizenberg, St. James, and Kalk Bay. This part of the route hugs the coastline, and the ocean views are a highlight. Colourful buildings, quirky shops, and the sound of waves make it a favourite for runners and onlookers.
Winding Roads and Dramatic Views
The scenery really steals the show on Chapman’s Peak Drive. The winding road along the cliffs offers wide-open views of the Atlantic, with dramatic drops and sweeping curves. It’s tough on the legs but hard to beat for sheer visual impact.
From Hout Bay to Constantia Nek, things get festive. Locals turn out in full force — music, dancing, energy stations, and loud encouragement help runners push through this section. It’s also where the route starts to bite a little more, with climbs and tired legs kicking in.
The road continues through Cecilia Forest and Rhodes Drive, offering some welcome shade and quiet. It’s one of those spots where runners get a brief breather, and spectators enjoy a peaceful place to take it all in.
As runners near the end, they pass Kirstenbosch Gardens, a leafy stretch that gives just enough calm before the final climb — known as Chet’s Hill. It’s short, but it stings.
The last stretch sees runners head back to the Southern Suburbs to the finish line at UCT’s rugby fields. Whether runners sprint in or just soak up the moment, it’s emotional. The cheers, the medals, the relief — it all comes together here.
If you’re not running but want to catch the best moments, head to:
- The Muizenberg to Kalk Bay stretch for coastal photos.
- Chapman’s Peak for iconic race shots.
- Hout Bay for atmosphere and crowd energy.
- Rhodes Drive for a quieter view.
- And, of course, the finish line at UCT for big emotions and finish-line celebrations.
Two Oceans Marathon Cape Town Recovery
Completing the Two Oceans Marathon is an incredible achievement, and after conquering the course, runners need some well-deserved R&R.
You already know the basics: hydrate, refuel with something light and nourishing, and keep your body moving with a short walk or some light stretching. A good massage never hurts either — Cape Town has plenty of excellent therapists who know how to work out those post-race aches.
And if food is part of your recovery plan, you’re in the right city. Smoothie bars, whole-food cafés, and nourishing bowls are easy to find. But recovery doesn’t have to end there — this is also your chance to unwind properly. Stroll along the beach, visit a wine farm, or treat yourself to a few hours at a wellness spa.
Or better yet, settle in with The Oyster Collection for a few extra days and let us take care of the rest. Our luxury accommodation options are the perfect base to rest, recharge, and enjoy Cape Town at your own pace.
